Chardonnay is the most widely planted white wine grape in the world, and here in the Yarra Valley, it is classed as the premium variety.
The typically cool climate in the valley balances out hot days with cool crisp nights, allowing the grapes to flourish and produce that fine acidic zest Chardonnay lovers adore.
Charles' take on his Estate Chardonnay has purposely moved away from the characteristic over-oaked flavouring, to a "new style" which focuses on subtle and integrated oak to deliver texture, weight, and an enjoyable structure.

Winemaking Notes
A mixture of Chardonnay clones P58, 76, 96 and 95 were selectively hand harvested in the cool of the morning then gently whole bunch pressed to approximately 600L/T, keeping the pristine free run separate from the pressings. The juice was cold settled and then transferred to a mixture of new (15%) and old French oak. Clones were kept separate in ferment with a combination of wild and inoculated yeast strains specifically selected for their attributes. The wine was allowed to rest in oak for approximately 10 months after which time, all barrels were heavily scrutinised to create a wine highlighting the multi-layered complexity through the diversity of clonal material.
Reviews
92 Points - Philip Rich - Halliday Wine Companion 2023
"Barrel fermented on full solids in French oak (15% new) with 10% of the wine going through mlf. A bright green gold. More complex than in 2021, with its aromas of oyster shells, hazelnuts and stone fruits. Still quite tightly wound and with good intensity before finishing grapefruit pithy and long.
